Dying UNIX News
On May 13, Hell froze over, and Oracle released Solaris 11.4.81 CBE. I just want to point out that this really doesn't make Oracle any less shitty—this will never change, but now they're still shitty but with a fresh Solaris 11 control. Well, isn't that great? Those interested can download Solaris from Oracle's website, but you need an account there, and undoubtedly, they'll make use of it in some nefarious way. You've been warned.
On May 16, Dr. Brian Robert Callaham revived pkgsrc… for AIX! When giving it a spin, I went down a fascinating rabbit hole and discovered a world of new possibilities for emulating the POWER platform on my ARM-based MacBook Air (M1 CPU). The fact that it works at all, and not too badly, simply amazes me. I really do not need pkgsrc on AIX, or AIX in general, but whatever rocks your boat. For those who don’t know and were scratching their heads: AIX is a commercial UNIX running on the POWER architecture created and maintained by IBM. You’re welcome.
OK, this one isn't dying, and is, in fact, doing rather good, but it's still UNIX, so I'm gonna smash it in here along for the ride. Who's gonna stop me? FreeBSD is readying its 14.3 version, with BETA4 scheduled for release today. RC1 is planned for May 30th, and it should be known shortly after if there will be any more RCs neecessary. Final release is planned for “sometime” in June.
