Kev Quirk:

The last point I'll make is this - the fedi is supposed to be a friendly, welcoming online space, right? But the fact is, it isn't. It's just like everywhere else online - the vocal minority are just as loud, and just as obnoxious as everywhere else.

The amount of damage done right now is staggering. It's really scary how quickly things can go south these days. The stake is ready, witches need to burn 🔥 Or are they? Kev kindly linked to a very nice post from Corey:

In recent days, there has been a minor furor across the fediverse related to one of the moderators at fosstodon. As a supporter, I have access to a group chat with other supporters and the admin team. I asked about the rumors and reports, and received a nice thoughtful reply from the mod in question.

There are bunch of cool insider tidbits I can only highly recommend you to read. I'm a supporter on Patreon and have been for some time, and now I just upped my tier to make sure this instance is going to survive this crisis. Here's one more from Corey:

All in all, mastodon is pretty fluid and it's easy to move yourself around, by design. It's relatively painless to move from one instance to another. Given the tradeoffs, I have decided to leave Fosstodon and move my account and financial support to hachyderm.io. I don't feel great about this decision, and I am particularly sad to leave what I consider to be a well-run instance with good people, because of public perception. This doesn't feel like living my values.

I can understand and I would lie if I said I didn't consider move to another instance. I did self-host Mastodon in the past, I know how challenging this might be, especially for instance as big as Fosstodon (and I don't even want to think about moderating it, sheesh). Given the tradeoffs, I'm not following Corey's steps, though. I'm going to leave Fosstodon only if there's no other choice and the instance admins decide this is the way to go.

I'd like to say it's been a fun 8 years, but it hasn't. I was fun for the first 3 years or so. After that, it's been pretty much shit, to varying degrees, the entire time. ✌🏻

It's heartbreaking to read—being an admin of an instance for 8 years without finding much (if any?) joy in that fact. Thank you Kev and rest of the team for your unthankful work you did in the shadows. Peace ✌🏻
